How does second servings differ from a food bank?
Although we both fight hunger, Second Servings takes a different, yet compatible approach:
Most food banks do not handle cooked food. Second Servings handles prepared and perishable food, as well as other types of surplus food.
Food banks generally receive food at their warehouse, then sort and repack it before making deliveries. Second Servings picks up and delivers food directly to the charity recipients in refrigerated vans, which maximizes foods’ freshness and minimizes cost.
Food banks deliver food primarily to food pantries that serve families. Most of Second Servings’ food goes to charity sites serving groups of people, such as soup kitchens, homeless shelters, day centers, etc.
Food banks charge their charities for food and delivery. Second Servings does not charge charity recipients or food donors.
is there liability for donating food?
Food donors are protected from liability for food donations to charities made in good faith to feed those in need. Learn more about the laws on our Safety + Liability page.
Is there a fee for your services?
